Tarkarli Beach

Maharashtra's Scuba Capital — Turquoise Konkan Waters & Backwater Bliss

Tarkarli Beach is a pristine white-sand beach in Malvan taluka, Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra — 490 km from Mumbai on NH-66. Where the Karli River meets the Arabian Sea, Tarkarli's water clarity (5–8 m visibility) supports the only certified scuba diving in Maharashtra with coral reefs, colourful fish, and the nearby Sindhudurg Fort visible from shore — making it Maharashtra's premier water sports and beach holiday destination.

A Glimpse into History of Tarkarli

Karli River Estuary Settlement

Tarkarli's geography — where the Karli River backwaters merge with the Arabian Sea — created a natural fishing settlement for the Malvani coastal community for centuries. The Malvani fishing culture (distinct language, cuisine, and seafaring traditions) is centred here. The beach itself remained a quiet fishing village until MTDC (Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation) identified its water clarity potential in the early 2000s.

Sindhudurg Fort Proximity (17th Century)

Tarkarli's waters surround the island of Sindhudurg Fort — the iconic sea fort built by Shivaji Maharaj in 1667. The shallow, clear waters between Tarkarli shore and the fort island were historically used by Maratha Navy boats to access the fort. Today, MTDC-operated boat rides from Tarkarli jetty to Sindhudurg Fort are the most popular activity — a 10-minute ride to a 350-year-old island fortress.

Scuba Diving — Maharashtra's First (2005)

MTDC launched Maharashtra's first certified scuba diving programme at Tarkarli in 2005. The Coral Garden dive site — 6 m depth, 7 m visibility — has hard and soft coral formations, lionfish, moray eels, and reef fish. Today 15+ private dive operators alongside MTDC offer PADI-certified beginner dives (₹1,200–2,000). Tarkarli draws 50,000+ water sports participants annually — the most at any Maharashtra beach.

Natural & Water Sports Significance

Tarkarli's Karli River backwaters (5 km upstream from beach) are the widest, calmest backwater system on the northern Konkan coast — ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and sunset cruises on traditionally painted wooden boats. The mangrove-lined banks host kingfishers, sea eagles, and seasonal flamingos. Tarkarli's sunset (facing west over the open Arabian Sea) is rated Maharashtra's finest beach sunset.

Events & Experiences

Water Sports Season (October–May)

Tarkarli's water sports operate October to May (monsoon closure June–September). MTDC's water sports complex offers scuba diving, snorkelling, glass-bottom boat rides, banana boat, jet skiing, and parasailing all within a 1 km stretch. Peak season (December–February) sees all operators fully booked — advance booking at mtdc.gov.in for scuba is essential 2–3 weeks ahead.

Malvan Seafood Festival

The Malvan Seafood and Culture Festival (organised by MTDC in January) at Tarkarli Beach showcases Malvani cuisine — Sol Kadhi, Kombdi Wade, Tisrya Masala (clam curry), fresh pomfret fry, and crab masala. Local women's self-help groups run food stalls. The festival coincides with peak water sports season — making January the most complete Tarkarli experience combining food, culture, and sea activities.

Did You Know?

Tarkarli's sea water turns bioluminescent blue during summer nights (April–May) due to Noctiluca scintillans — a marine algae that glows when disturbed. Waves breaking on the shore glow electric blue in the dark — creating one of India's rarest natural spectacles. Fishermen have reported the phenomenon for generations but its scientific documentation only began in 2009. Night beach walks in April–May are Tarkarli's most extraordinary experience.
